象牙の根付は雷神と風神が大きなサンダルの上で腕相撲をしている場面を描いたもので、繊細な面立ちは力強い表情で刻まれ、髪型や衣紋の表現にも細部へのこだわりが感じられます。大きなサンダルが台座として機能しています。
底部には署名の正久斎 Shōkyūsai が刻まれています。
根付とは、根を意味する漢字の ne（根）と付けるを意味する tsuke（付け）を組み合わせた名称で、日本の小さな彫像で、本来は着物の帯に留め具として物を固定するために用いられてきました。19世紀後半からはヨーロッパやアメリカで非常にコレクターズアイテムとして人気を博し、題材の多様さ・細部の精緻さ・経年美・そして触感の魅力が称賛されました。
