Description from the seller

Item Description
Large Japanese Nezumi-Shino Stoneware Vase with Carved Pine Tree Design — Mino Ware
A large and imposing Japanese stoneware flower vase in the Nezumi-Shino ("grey Shino") tradition of Mino ware, decorated with a boldly carved and painted pine tree (matsu) design.
This is a substantial, full-bodied vessel — standing 30 cm tall with a generous rounded shoulder — that has real weight and presence and makes a commanding display piece.
The form rises from a warm exposed clay foot through a richly textured grey body to a tall rounded shoulder and a thick, sculptural rolled mouth-rim.
The decoration is executed in the classic Nezumi-Shino manner: an iron-rich slip (oniita) is applied over the white Mino clay, the pine motif is then carved and scratched away (kaki-otoshi), and a thick feldspathic Shino glaze is laid over the whole.
In the firing, the iron ground develops its characteristic soft mouse-grey colour while the carved pine emerges in pale white relief, with subtle scorched reddish "fire colour" (hiiro) breaking through at the foot and rim.
Ancient, weathered pines wrap around the body with windswept needles and gnarled trunks, rendered with the spontaneity and depth of an ink painting — a quintessentially Japanese subject symbolizing longevity and endurance.
The matte, finely crawled glaze surface has the quiet, austere beauty (wabi-sabi) prized in Shino ware, with every side offering a different view.
The artist is unidentified, and there is no box.
This large Nezumi-Shino vase is a serious decorative statement, equally striking displayed on its own as a ceramic sculpture or holding a generous seasonal arrangement.

Size
Height: 30 cm
Maximum diameter: 22 cm
Mouth — outer diameter: 6.9 cm
Mouth — inner diameter: 5.2 cm

Weight 2,630g

Condition
In good condition, with no notable damage; the reddish tone at the foot and rim is the natural "fire colour" (hiiro) characteristic of Shino ware, not a flaw.
No box.

Artist Profile
The vase is made in the Nezumi-Shino ("grey Shino") style, a type of Shino ware within the Mino ware tradition of Gifu Prefecture, first developed in the Momoyama period (late 16th century).
Nezumi-Shino is produced by coating the white Mino clay body with an iron-bearing slip (oniita), carving the design through the slip (kaki-otoshi), and covering the whole with a thick feldspathic Shino glaze; in the firing, the ground turns a soft mouse-grey while the carved design stands out in white.
It is regarded as one of the most artistically expressive of all Shino types, and historic Momoyama examples are designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties in Japan.
