Ancient Roman polychrome painted wall fresco fragment from the Late Republican–Early Imperial period (c. 50 BC–AD 50), in plaster, 17 × 14 × 5 cm, Good condition.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Ancient Roman polychrome painted wall-plaster / fresco fragment, attributed to the Late Republican–Early Imperial period, circa 50 BC–AD 50, Mediterranean region.

A substantial fragment of ancient architectural wall decoration preserving an attractive geometric composition in several colours. The painted surface displays broad pink/red fields with contrasting white, green, yellow/ochre and blue-grey bands and details, forming part of a larger Roman architectural decorative scheme.

The style and arrangement of the coloured fields and linear architectural divisions are compatible with Roman wall-painting traditions of the late Second to Third Style period, approximately the 1st century BC to 1st century AD.

The painted surface survives upon its original substantial coarse plaster/mortar backing, clearly visible from the sides. The complete fragment measures approximately:

17 × 14 × 5 cm

The considerable thickness and surviving underlying plaster make this an especially interesting example for displaying the construction of Roman painted wall decoration, as well as its original polychrome surface.

Provenance:
Acquired from Harmer Rooke Numismatists Ltd., USA, during the 1970s.
The object is accompanied by the original invoice of purchase, providing documentation of its ownership history from the 1970s.

Condition:
Ancient architectural fragment with irregular broken edges, surface wear, pigment loss, deposits and age-related deterioration, as expected. Several colours and elements of the original painted decoration remain clearly visible. Please refer carefully to the photographs for condition.

Dating: Roman, Late Republican–Early Imperial period, c. 50 BC–AD 50 (attributed).

Region: Mediterranean empire

An evocative surviving fragment of Roman interior architecture retaining both its ancient painted decoration and substantial original plaster backing.
