モルダヴァイトは透明度の高い天然鉱物で、緑色のさまざまなニュアンスを示します。隕石の衝突の残骸が起源となるもので、テクタイト科に属します。モルダヴァイトの結晶は、およそ1,500万年前に、ドイツのバイエルン西部で隕石衝突の後に形成されました。
この石の名称の由来は、ヴルタヴァ川（ドイツ語名はモルダウ）に由来します。発見された地域の川の名にちなみ、モルダライトと呼ばれるようになりました。
この希少な石は、約6,000平方キロメートルの流域を蛇行するモルダヴァ川に密接に結びついており、宝石にその名を与えています。
ドイツの地質学者・鉱物学者アーサー・G・ヴェルナー（1750–1817）は、その緑色がビンのガラスを連想させるとして、この石を「瓶石（石瓶）」と呼んでいました。
