Takaoka Copperware Bronze Vase "Phoenix" by Kurose Sokō

This bronze vase, titled "鳳凰 Hōō Hanaire" (Phoenix Flower Vase), is a work of Takaoka Copperware by the artist 黒瀬宗康 Kurose Sokō. The design features the phoenix, a motif long regarded as an auspicious symbol in Japan, rendered in the deep, subdued tones characteristic of traditional karakane bronze. The refined, understated silhouette and quiet, minimal beauty echo the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, while the artist's careful handwork is evident in every detail. A dignified piece suited to an alcove or entryway display.

Artist Profile
Kurose Sokō is a metal casting artist based in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. Born in 1927, he trained under his teacher Ichinose Sōshin for sixteen years before establishing his independent practice in 1973, taking the name first-generation Kurose Sokō. He held a solo exhibition at the Tankō Center Tokyo branch in 1991, and exhibited tea ceremony utensils at Shinjuku Mitsukoshi in 1992.
