Description from the seller

Apres-guerre

Shomei Tomatsu
Chuokoron-sha/1971/Japanese/265*217*15

The “Postwar School / Apres-guerre” is a collection of photographs by Shomei Higashimatsu, one of the leading postwar photographers in Japan. Daido Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki are two of Japan's internationally acclaimed masters. The two of us are his sword-bearers and scourers. He was a pioneer of the turbulence in Japanese photography from the late 1960s to the 1970s, including Araki, Moriyama, Provoke, and the Compola generation. This book is part of the “Contemporary Series of Images” by 10 prominent photographers, and is composed of illustrations of works from the early 50's and 60's, literally appraising, postwar subjects such as the world, manners and customs, and people. There are also a few rare works, such as a portrait of Rentaro Mikuni, the star of the movie “Breeding (1961),” for which Tomatsu collaborated on the screenplay. The foreword is by Akiyuki Nosaka.
