【Product details】

A collection of Japanese Buddhist orin bells from the Showa era, comprising 39 pieces in total: 10 brass orin bells, 10 decorative cushions, 10 strikers and 9 stands. The bells vary slightly in size, shape, tone and patination, while the colourful brocade cushions and red or dark-toned stands give the group a traditional Japanese Buddhist altar appearance.

Orin are small standing bells traditionally used at Buddhist household altars and in temple rituals. They are gently struck with a striker to mark prayers, sutra chanting and moments of meditation, producing a clear resonant tone that gradually fades. Unlike Himalayan singing bowls, which may be sounded by rubbing around the rim, Japanese orin are traditionally struck to create a single sustained chime.

The 10 strikers consist of six plain wooden examples, one leather-covered example and three fabric-covered examples. The nine stands are a mixture of lacquered wooden and plastic examples, while the cushions are made in a variety of colourful brocade fabrics with traditional decorative patterns. The individual differences in materials, colours and signs of long use give the collection considerable character.

The bells are made of brass and show the natural surface changes associated with age and repeated ritual use. Such orin were practical devotional objects rather than purely decorative pieces and formed an important part of everyday Buddhist worship in Japanese homes.

The set is in used vintage condition with age- and use-related wear and dirt. The bells have discolouration, stains, scuffs, scratches and areas of verdigris/corrosion inside and outside; some cushions have staining, fading, loose threads, tears and fabric deterioration; the strikers have scuffs, dirt, light mould and wear or fraying to the fabric and leather coverings; and the stands have scuffs, scratches and small areas of finish loss around some edges. Please refer to the photographs for details.
