【Product details】
An elegant Kutani ware porcelain vase created after 1994 by Masahiko Tokuda (徳田正彦), later known as the Third Yasokichi Tokuda (三代 徳田八十吉). Its slender cylindrical neck rises from a softly rounded body, creating a refined and well-balanced silhouette.
The surface is covered with luminous gradations of cobalt blue, turquoise and green around the shoulder, deepening into rich violet and near-black tones towards the base. Rather than relying on painted outlines or figurative decoration, the artist used carefully controlled coloured glazes to create a continuous flow of colour. The glossy surface and subtle variations in tone give the vase a remarkable sense of depth and light, which changes as it is viewed from different angles.
Kutani ware is a celebrated Japanese porcelain tradition associated with Ishikawa Prefecture and is renowned for its rich colours, sophisticated glazing and highly decorative character. This vase represents a modern development of that tradition, transforming the vivid Kutani palette into an abstract composition created entirely through coloured glaze.
Masahiko Tokuda (1933–2009) studied at Kanazawa College of Art and trained under his grandfather, the First Yasokichi Tokuda, and his father, the Second Yasokichi Tokuda. Through extensive research into traditional Kutani overglaze enamels, he developed the celebrated Yōsai technique, in which carefully formulated coloured glazes produce smooth and luminous tonal gradations without conventional painted designs.
He succeeded to the name Third Yasokichi Tokuda in 1977. In 1997, he was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for coloured glazed porcelain, commonly known as a Living National Treasure.
The base bears the artist’s mark. The vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box and a printed biography leaflet.
Very good vintage condition with minimal wear. Please refer to the photos for details.
