Description from the seller
Taíno Diorite Idol (Zemí) – 10th to 15th Century AD
A finely carved Taíno stone idol (zemí) dating to the 10th to 15th Century AD. The figure is executed from a dense green-grey stone, likely diorite, and displays the characteristic spiritual imagery associated with Taíno ceremonial art. Large almond-shaped eyes, perforated ears, intricate geometric engravings, and stylized anthropomorphic features reflect the sophisticated symbolic language of the Greater Antilles during the Late Taíno period. Such zemís served as sacred embodiments of ancestral and supernatural beings and occupied a central role in ritual practices, social authority, and communication with the spiritual world. The extensive engraved decoration covering both faces of the piece demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship and highlights the skill of Taíno lapidaries working hard stone materials. An impressive and highly decorative example of pre-Columbian Caribbean stone carving.
Material: Diorite (likely)
Dimensions: Height 21.5 cm
Provenance:
German private collection, acquired in Germany in the 1980s.
