Based on the original cartographic work of Gerard Mercator (1512–1594) and engraved by Abraham Goos, the map presents Africa with the geographical knowledge available to European cartographers in the mid-17th century: the coastal regions, major rivers, trade routes, and settlements are depicted in careful detail, while the interior reflects the limits of European exploration at the time. A German title appears above the map, an ornamental title cartouche and a mileage scale cartouche appear within the map, characteristic of the Janssonius-Hondius publishing tradition. The "Atlas Minor" — a smaller and more affordable edition of the great Mercator-Hondius atlases — was widely circulated across Europe and served explorers, scholars, merchants, and traders as the standard geographical reference of the period. Joannes Janssonius (1588–1664) was one of the leading figures of the Dutch Golden Age of cartography, a major competitor to the Blaeu firm and the principal heir of the Mercator-Hondius cartographic legacy through his marriage connection to Henricus Hondius. This map descends from the great cartographic legacy of Gerard Mercator, whose "Atlas" — completed posthumously by his son Rumold Mercator and then acquired by Jodocus Hondius in 1604 — became the foundation of the dominant Amsterdam cartographic tradition of the 17th century. The "Atlas Minor," of which this map forms a part, was first published in 1607 as a smaller, more portable, and more affordable version of the full Mercator-Hondius atlas, designed for a broader commercial market; it went through numerous editions in Latin, French, German, and English throughout the first half of the 17th century. Abraham Goos (ca. 1590–1643) was a skilled Amsterdam engraver who contributed plates to several Janssonius publications. The mid-17th-century depiction of Africa on this map reflects both the accuracy of the well-charted coastlines — established through centuries of Portuguese, Dutch, and English maritime trade — and the speculative interior geography still based largely on ancient classical sources and travellers' accounts rather than systematic survey.
