Description
A rare and highly sculptural iron musical currency from the Cameroon / Nigeria border region, locally attributed to the Véré people and stylistically close to Chamba-Mambila prestige ironwork.
カメルーン／ナイジェリア国境地域産の希少で高度に彫塑的な鉄製の音楽的通貨。地元ではヴェレ族に帰属するとされ、チャンバ＝マンビラ様式の威信鉄工品に近い。

The object is composed of a hollow crescent-shaped central body, a large arched iron frame and several mobile rings. The hollow body and loose rings give the piece a sound-producing quality, which explains the usual description of this type of object as a “musical currency”.
本体は中空の三日月形の中央部、広いアーチ状の鉄枠、そして複数の可動する輪で構成される。中空の本体と遊動する輪が音を生む性質を与え、この種の物体が『音楽的通貨』と呼ばれる理由だ。

The rings are mobile, except for two of them.
輪は二つを除き可動する。

These iron objects were not ordinary everyday coins. In Central Africa and the Cameroon-Nigeria border region, forged iron currencies often functioned as prestige objects, symbols of wealth, and exchange valuables used in important social transactions, including marriage payments and agreements between notable families.
これらの鉄製品は日常の普通の硬貨ではなかった。中央アフリカおよびカメルーン＝ナイジェリア国境地域では、鍛造鉄の通貨はしばしば威信の対象物として機能し、富の象徴であり、重要な社会的取引で用いられる交換価値として、婚姻の支払いや名門家同士の合意などに使われてきた。

This example is particularly attractive for its compact power and strong sculptural balance. The hollow crescent form has a dense, almost animal-like presence, while the arched structure and suspended rings give the object both rhythm and movement. The dark oxidised patina, worn surfaces and irregular hand-forged construction give it a strong archaic character.
この例は、凝縮された力と力強い彫塑的バランスが特に魅力的である。中空の三日月形は密度の高い、ほとんど動物のような存在感を持ち、弧を描く構造と吊り輪がリズムと動きを物体に与える。黒い酸化した錆色のpatina、磨耗した表面、手鍛造の不規則な作りが強い古風な趣を与える。

A fine and unusual small prestige currency, at once monetary, musical and sculptural.
