Description
A fine Turkana wooden headrest from northern Kenya, of the type known as ekicholong.
Among the Turkana, headrests were highly personal everyday objects. They were used to support the head during rest and to preserve elaborate hairstyles, while also functioning as portable objects carried by pastoral men during daily life. Some examples could also serve as small stools when herding livestock.
This example has a particularly elegant and balanced construction. The oval lower base, flared central support and broad upper platform create a very sculptural silhouette. The slightly concave upper surface shows clear signs of use, while the warm honey-brown patina gives the piece a strong and intimate presence.
A leather side element is still present, adding to the character of the object and underlining its portable nature. The form is sober, functional and beautifully proportioned, typical of the refined utilitarian objects of the Turkana.
A very attractive East African headrest, notable for its patina, balance and honest signs of age and use.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, scratches, small marks, abrasions, minor cracks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. The upper resting element has been cleanly broken and re-glued; the repair is discreet and the object remains stable for display. Nice old patina throughout. Leather element preserved.
