Large Maasai calabash from Kenya, a gourd with leather and beads, 47 cm high, dating to the 20th century, provenance collected in the field by the seller, in fair condition and authentic, sold without its stand.
Description from the seller
Large decorated calabash – Maasai / Kenya – Gourd, leather and beads – 20th century
Details
Origin: Maasai
Country: Kenya
Material: Calabash, leather, glass / plastic beads
Height: 47 cm
Period: 20th century
Provenance: collected in the field by the seller
Stand: not included
Description
A large Maasai calabash, remarkable for its elongated shape, warm reddish-brown patina and finely engraved decoration.
The surface is richly decorated with incised geometric motifs and animal figures, including an elephant and a giraffe. This animal iconography, less typical of strictly traditional Maasai decoration, suggests a broader Kenyan decorative vocabulary, probably influenced by Kamba carving and engraving traditions.
The calabash is fitted with leather elements: a carrying strap, a leather collar at the top, and a vertical leather band decorated with small colored beads. These details give the piece a strong visual presence and underline its pastoral context, while the engraved decoration adds an unusually graphic and narrative quality.
A very decorative ethnographic object, combining fine patina, elegant proportions and a charming animal-themed decoration.
Despite some age-related cracks, the calabash remains structurally sound and retains a strong decorative presence.
Condition
Good overall condition with signs of age and use. Wear to the calabash surface, small scratches, stains and rubbing. Some cracks are visible, but they do not affect the structure or stability of the object. The leather elements show age, dryness and wear. Some irregularities and small losses are visible, consistent with use and age. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The calabash only. The stand shown in the photographs is not included.
