Description from the seller
Highly Sought-After Sepik River Flute Stopper
A particularly interesting and highly sought-after traditional object from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. This beautifully carved flute stopper is a fine example of the distinctive artistic traditions of the Sepik peoples and is especially appreciated by collectors of New Guinea tribal art and ethnographic objects.
The stopper dates from the 1970s and is in good overall condition, with a lovely aged appearance and the character one expects from a traditionally made object.
Flute stoppers such as this are fascinating both as functional objects and as expressions of the rich artistic and ceremonial traditions of the Sepik River region. Their relatively small size makes them particularly attractive to collectors, while their detailed carving gives them considerable visual presence.
