English

Vivace colorazione a mano originale su carta pesante.

World — Twin Hemisphere World Map (global, including Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctic regions)
Additional Information
This map was published during one of the most consequential moments in the history of geographical knowledge: the years immediately following Captain James Cook's three Pacific voyages (1768–1779), which transformed European understanding of the Pacific Ocean, Australia, New Zealand, and the Antarctic. The map's frank acknowledgement of geographical uncertainty — Australia's incomplete coastline, New Zealand's partial charting, and the "Inconnues" Antarctic — reflects the honest cartographic practice of the late French Enlightenment, in contrast to earlier maps that filled unknown regions with speculation. The speculative "Terre de la Compagnie" and "Terre d'Yesso" on the Northwest Coast of North America are survivals of older geographical mythology that Cook's voyages had not yet fully displaced. Charles-François Delamarche acquired the plates of both Robert de Vaugondy and his father Gilles Robert de Vaugondy and republished them through the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, often updating them with the latest discoveries; this 1795 "An III" edition is one of the rarest and most historically resonant of these issues, produced at the height of the French Revolution and reflecting the Revolutionary government's continued commitment to scientific and geographical publication.
