An original Japanese woodblock print by Hideo Hagiwara, one of the major artists associated with post-war Japanese Sōsaku Hanga.
This work, Grieving Pierrot, was created in 1955 and belongs to Hagiwara's Twentieth Century Series. It is an early figurative work from an important period in the artist's development as a printmaker.
The work is numbered 1/30, making this a particularly early impression within the limited edition.

The composition depicts a Pierrot suspended above a stylised cityscape, surrounded by vivid areas of red, purple, turquoise, blue and black. The expressive figure and strong colour contrasts are characteristic of Hagiwara's early, modernist approach to woodblock printing.

A work titled Grieving Pierrot by Hideo Hagiwara, dated 1955 and executed as a woodblock print, is recorded in the collections of both the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art and the Minami-Alps Municipal Museum of Art in Japan. The Yamanashi Prefectural Museum records the work as part of the Twentieth Century Series, measuring approximately 35.5 × 25.3 cm. The Minami-Alps Municipal Museum also records a 1955 woodblock print titled Grieving Pierrot.
The present sheet measures approximately 38.2 × 27.6 cm, based on the physical measurement of the offered work.
