Horn and Gilt-Metal Mounted Walking Cane, circa 1900

A late 19th/early 20th century walking cane, the shaped horn handle of gently curved form and warm honey-brown tone, above an elaborately decorated gilt-metal collar worked with scrolling foliate ornament and centred by a cartouche engraved J. BEITH, on a polished reddish-brown wooden shaft.

19世紀後半から20世紀初頭の歩行杖。曲線を描く角の持ち手は穏やかなカーブと温かなハニー色の色調で、その上には渦巻き状の葉飾りで装飾された金メッキのカラーが取り付けられ、中央には J. BEITH が刻まれたカルトゥーシュが配置され、磨かれた赤茶色の木軸の上に載っています。

Overall wear consistent with age and use. The horn handle with natural variations, surface wear and an old fissure/crack towards one end. The gilt-metal collar with rubbing, patination and a vertical split extending through the decorated section. The wooden shaft with minor scratches, marks and wear. The lower end fitted with a later rubber ferrule.

経年および使用による全体的な摩耗が見られます。角の持ち手には自然な変化、表面の擦り傷・摩耗、端の方に古い裂け目が見られます。金メッキのカラーには擦れ、緑青風化、装飾部を貫通する縦割れが見られます。木軸には細かな傷や痕、摩耗があります。下端には後年取り付けられたゴム製の先端キャップが付いています。

The metal collar is unmarked and has not been tested for precious-metal content; it is therefore described as gilt metal.

金具のカラーには銘はなく、貴金属含有の検査は行われていません。したがって“金メッキ金属”と表記します。
