Northeast Africa 145 (NEA 145)
Libya
Purchased: 2024
Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)
History: Reportedly found in Libya by meteorite hunters in 2024 and purchased by Ali Muftah.
Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Olivine basalt, dominated by elongated pyroxene grains up to 3.5 mm (~50%) with smaller amounts of olivine (~25%) and interstitial plagioclase (~25%). Olivine grains display igneous zoning with increasing Fe concentrations from core to rim. Pyroxene shows a patchy chemical zoning. Plagioclase has been completely shock-transformed to maskelynite. Accessories are ilmenite, Cr-spinel, merrillite, and FeS.
Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean mineral compositions: Olivine Fa49.6±5.2 (Fa43.0-60.3); Fe/Mn (at.): 54.7; n=11. Pyroxene Fs32.0±7.0Wo19.8±9.0 (Fs20.6-39.6Wo7.6-34.3); Fe/Mn (at.): 31.5; n=14. Plagioclase (maskelynite) An49.9±2.9Or2.9±0.6 (An43.9-53.0Or2.0-3.9); n=11.
Classification: Martian (olivine-bearing shergottite), based on texture and mineral chemistry.
