THE GUARDIAN OF THE SAMURAI ESTATE

In traditional Japanese warrior culture, samurai kept their armour displayed in their homes as a symbol of constant readiness to answer their lord's call to battle at a moment's notice. As peaceful times arrived, this practice evolved, and the armour became a spiritual guardian believed to ward off evil energies and invite good fortune into the household.

Unlike modern overseas replicas, this is an authentic vintage suit of armour crafted by traditional artisans in Japan, meticulously structured as a highly complete, wearable set for an adult male. It is a 20th-century (Showa period) piece made in the traditional manner - not an Edo-period antique.

CRAFTSMANSHIP & TERMINOLOGY
The lacquered finish forms a striking contrast with the odoshi (the lacing that binds the armour plates). The helmet features radiating ribbed decorations that exude formal dignity, accompanied by an imposing menpo (an armoured facial mask with a moustache, designed to intimidate enemies). Throughout the components, the seamless integration of solid plates, intricate chainmail and elegant brocade textiles showcases a profound level of craftsmanship. - Kabuto (helmet) with a kuwagata crest and maedate, fukikaeshi and shikoro
- Menpo (face mask) with moustache and neck cord
- Do (cuirass) with pierced chest fittings
- Kusazuri (tassets), sode (shoulder guards), kote (armoured sleeves with chainmail), haidate (thigh guards), suneate (shin guards)
- Yoroi-butsu - the traditional wooden storage box that serves as a display base

CONDITION
Preowned vintage item. It has signs of age including slight soiling, scratches and fading, as is natural for a piece of this age. Please check the photos carefully and judge the condition for yourself before bidding.

To protect the vintage textiles during transit, we enclose a premium natural kimono insect repellent. The traditional scent will completely dissipate after airing the armour out for about a week.
