ビザンチン様式の灰色の陶器製容器で、先端の細い底部を持つ中空の球形本体を特徴とします。上部は短い細い首へと立ち上がり、径がわずかに広がって厚い縁と小さな口を形成します。胴体には装飾は施されていません。胴部と口周りには欠け、へこみ、表面の虫食い状況が見られます。表面には土汚れのような沈着物や変色も認められます。口部は大きく欠けています。
このアイテムは「ギリシャの炎」として知られる爆発性液体を満たして携行手榴弾として使用されていたと考えられます。液体炎は別名「液体の火」とも呼ばれ、ビザンチン軍の最も有名な武器のひとつであり、長い間外国の侵攻からビザンチン帝国を守ってきました。防衛と攻撃の両方の状況で使用され、帝国の生存に大きな役割を果たした武器です。燃えやすい混合物の配合は何世紀にもわたり厳重に管理され、帝国崩壊後には取り戻すことができず、正確な組成は今日まで不明のままです。その平均的な大きさと握り具合から、近距離の闘争で手投げされたと推測されますが、長距離戦や海戦での使用を否定するものではありません。投石機で投げられた可能性が最も高いと考えられます。
