Description from the seller

Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD)
Height: 10 cm | Width: 15 cm
Private Collection, Hong Kong

A charming and highly decorative Chinese Han dynasty pottery chicken, finely modelled with a rounded body, raised neck, small pointed beak and fan-shaped tail. The wings and tail are detailed with incised feather lines, giving the figure a lively and naturalistic appearance.

The surface retains extensive traces of its original polychrome decoration, with warm ochre, grey, white and reddish pigments still visible beneath attractive natural tomb encrustation. The preservation of the original painted surface gives the piece strong archaeological character and great visual appeal.

The figure is in excellent overall condition. As is often seen with Han dynasty pottery animals, the original pottery legs were lost in the tomb. The present legs are later bronze replacements, made to support and display the figure correctly.

Pottery animals such as this were made as mingqi, or spirit objects, and were placed in tombs to accompany the deceased into the afterlife. Chickens symbolized domestic prosperity, nourishment and abundance, reflecting the importance of farm animals in daily Han life.

Comparable pottery chickens from the Han dynasty can be found in the collection of the Han Yangling Museum, the mausoleum museum of Emperor Jing of Han, where similar painted pottery animals were excavated from imperial tomb contexts.

A beautiful and authentic Han dynasty pottery bird, with strong original polychromy, elegant form and excellent display presence. Perfect for collectors of early Chinese tomb pottery and Han dynasty art.
