中空の球形の胴を持つ大きなビザンティン磁器製容器で、先端に向かってわずかに細く先細りしている。上部は短い細い首部につながり、太い縁を持つ小さな口部で終わる。容器の肩部には、刻まれた一連の円で囲まれている。底付近では、より多くの刻まれた円が、より大きな同心円モチーフと交互に配置されている。Such an item would have been filled with an explosive liquid known as ‘Greek Fire’ and used as a hand grenade. 本体には微細な傷が見られます。表面には土の付着、へこみ、欠けがあります。縁には欠けがあります。肩部にひび割れがあります。
Greek fire, also referred to as liquid fire, was the most famous weapon of Byzantine arsenal, saving the Byzantines for centuries from Arab attacks. 防衛と攻撃の双方で使用され、帝国の生存にとって重要な役割を果たしました。可燃混合物の配合は長い間厳重に管理され、帝国崩壊後には取り返しのつかないほど失われました。したがって正確な組成は今日まで明らかにはならず、研究は石油を重要な成分として示唆しています。おおよそサイズと握りから、手投げで短距離の戦闘で使用されたと推定されるが、長距離の戦闘や海上での使用を排除するものではない。おそらくは投石機で投げられた可能性が高い。
