精巧に鋳造・打ち出された古代ギリシャの銅製ボウルで、浅く円形の容器と、やや平坦な底面を特徴とします。内壁はやや凸状に外向きに傾き、口は広く、厚く補強された平坦な縁へと続きます。表面にはパティーナと地表の付着物が見られ、年齢相応の使用痕がうかがえます。内外の表面には傷があり、古さにふさわしい摩耗が感じられます。
古代ギリシャでは、銅合金のブロンズ（本例のようなもの）、テラコッタ、ガラス、石、木など、さまざまな形状・材料の容器が作られていました。これらは、葬送用・奉納用・薬用・家庭用の洗浄や、葡萄酒・油・水・化粧品を入れる容器として、さまざまな用途に用いられました。銅を主成分とするブロンズは、地中海世界で広く入手可能で、錫を含み、時には鉛を含むこともあり、銀・金の安価な代替として普及しました。したがって、銅製の容器は墓所に埋葬されたものが多く、現存数も多いのです。
