About the print
A quiet mountain scene from Sansui Gachō, an album of landscape designs published in Nagoya in 1835. The right-hand leaf is given almost entirely to a single rounded peak, its slope printed in soft grey gradation and crowned with dark blue-green clumps of foliage; from beneath the trees a slender waterfall drops in several strands down the full height of the page. Across the gutter the eye travels outward instead of upward — thatched farmhouses sheltered by pines, then blue hills, then flat bands of mist over open water. It is a composition built on the oldest premise of sansui painting, "mountain and water," but handled with the economy of a printed album page.
The palette is almost entirely blue against the warm tone of the paper, with only the faintest earth colour on the walls of the houses — the restrained, blue-dominant manner associated with Hokusai's landscape work of these same years. A copy of this album is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, where the artist is catalogued as Katsushika Hokusai; Nagoya was a long-standing stronghold of the Hokusai school, and the 1835 date falls squarely within the master's great landscape period.
