Description from the seller
ローマの赤土の油燈で、丸みを帯びた胴、くぼんだ円板部、三角形の渦巻状ノズルを有する。円板の左側には注入口が一つあり、装飾図を取り巻くように三つの刻まれた同心円がある。中央の円板には、丸みを帯びた胴体と円錐形の首を持ち、二つの曲がり取っ手を備えたアンフォラの図像が描かれている。ノズルには小さな通気孔があり、ろうそく穴の上部に位置する。裏返しは無地で、円形の台座がある。円板の輪郭の定義が欠けている。表面には土質の被膜が付着している。ノズルの縁には大きな欠けがある。
古代ローマの油燈は、ギリシャ語の“λυχνος”に由来する“lychnus”と呼ばれ、帝国全体にわたる流通量ではほぼ比類がないほど普及してきた。ヘレニズム時代後期に初めて発展し、油燈は地中海全域の陶器の中で最も長くその基本的な形を保ち続けた。ローマ帝国の拡大と共に確立された広大な交易網は、この品をヨーロッパ、東アジア、北アフリカへと広めた。油燈は主に三つの理由でローマ人によって使用された。私的・公的空間を照らすため、神々への供物として神殿に捧げるため、墓や葬送の場に置くためである。直線的・幾何学的・円形のデザインに加え、油燈の装飾として好まれた主題には、神々や神話の場面、日常生活の情景、剣闘士の図、娯楽・演劇に関する図、さまざまな動物・魚・鳥などが含まれていた。
