ビザンチン期の陶器容器で、中空の球形本体を特徴とし、基部へかけてわずかに細くなり、丸みを帯びた形状である。上部は短く狭い首と、厚い縁を持つ小さな開口部へと立ち上がる。胴の肩部には、大きな同心円が連なり、それが小さな線刻の円を二つ挟む装飾が施されている。胴部中央には、平行する曲線状の擦痕が連続して走る。こうした器は、“ギリシャの火”と称される爆発性液体で満たされ、手榴弾として使用されたと考えられる。本体表面には小さな擦り傷がある。表面には土質の付着物、凹み、欠けが認められる。縁部の欠け。ギリシャの火（液体の炎とも呼ばれる）は、ビザンチン帝国の最も有名な武器の一つで、長い間アラブの攻撃から帝国を救ってきた。防衛および攻撃の双方で使用され、その武器はビザンツ帝国の生存において重要な役割を果たした。燃焼性混合物の配合は何世紀にもわたり厳重に守られ、帝国崩壊後には取り戻せないほど失われた。したがって正確な組成は今日まで不明のままであるが、研究は石油を重要な成分として示唆している。平均的なサイズと握りから、この器は徒手で投げられる近距離戦で使用されたと推測される一方、長距離戦闘や海上戦での手榴弾の可能性も排除されない。おそらくはカタパルトで投げられたと考えられる。寸法: 幅8.8cm × 高さ10.5cm 出所: かつての英国私蔵コレクション、1990年代に取得。
