Item Description
This is a striking guinomi sake cup by the contemporary Japanese ceramicist 市川透 Ichikawa Toru (b. 1973). Ichikawa trained from 2011 under the celebrated Bizen ware master 隠崎隆一 Kakurezaki Ryuichi (b. 1950), before establishing his own independent studio in Okayama Prefecture in 2015.
The cup is worked in Ichikawa's distinctive avant-garde style, sometimes referred to as "Kinkousai" (gold-iridescent) work: the surface is built up in fractured, rock-like white glazed sections that appear to have split open under their own tension, revealing brilliant gold luster glaze glinting through the cracks.
