Impressive 24 cm Ancient Roman / Byzantine Copper Alloy Carinated Jug – Pinched Spout – – 1st–7th C. AD
An impressive and substantial ancient Roman to Byzantine copper alloy (bronze) jug or ewer (oinochoe), dating from the 1st to 7th Century AD, originating from the Eastern Mediterranean region.
This vessel stands out due to its monumental proportions (24 cm height, 22 cm width), characterized by a broad, sharp carinated body designed for maximum stability.
The neck rises to an asymmetrical pinched rim forming a functional pouring spout.
The surface retains an exceptional, untouched mineralized crust, featuring deep olive-green malachite encrustations over a dense copper matrix.
Condition & Technical Report:
Structure: Complete metallic body with intact carinated shoulder and solid ring base. Typical ancient distortion and minor ancient rim stress fractures along the spout lip .
Handle: Features a secondary hand-forged flat metallic ribbon handle, securely fixed to the rim and shoulder.
Surface: Untouched ancient burial patina with natural oxidation layers. Free of modern chemical stripping or synthetic repainting.
