エメラルドは、化学式 Al2Be3[Si6O18] を持つ珪酸塩ミネラル・ベリリウムの暗色から明るい緑色までの変種です。色の変化幅は暗い青緑色から明るい黄緑色までで、微量なクロム（Cr3+）とバナジウムイオン（V3+）の混入によって生じます。
純粋なベリルと同様、エメラルドも六方晶系で結晶化し、通常は六角形のプリズマ状から柱状の結晶を形成し、表面にはガラスのような光沢を示します。モース硬度は7.5〜8で、ベリルと同等です。
