川本五郎による灰釉（灰釉）を施した盃（ぐいのみ）は、戦後日本陶芸の大立者であり、日展の審査委員でもあった。微妙に不均一で手作り感のあるリムと、灰釉が石物の本体上で不均等に割れ広がりながら滲むような豊かな斑点の表面は、川本の作風を象徴する特徴である。粘土の自然な荒さ・歪み・亀裂を欠点として修正するのではなく、作品の表現力の源泉として捉えた作家として知られている。本品には作者自らが書き、封印した元箱（友箱）も付属する。
【作家概要】
川本五郎（1919-1986）は、千年を超える陶磁の歴史を持つ愛知県窯業地帯の瀬戸窯家の出身。愛知県立窯業学校での訓練を経て、岐阜の日本陶磁研究所でデザインを学び、1950年に瀬戸の陶工・川本魁題の名と窯を継承。以降、石釜と磁器の両方を自在に行き来し、窯業の中心を wheel に置く瀬戸の伝統を超え、粘土そのものの raw な性格を前景化する形を好む、同世代の中でも最も称賛され、異端と見なされた陶芸家の一人となった。
その業績は多岐にわる。灰釉磁器は1953年の朝日現代陶芸展で最高賞を受賞、1958年ブリュッセル万博ではグランプリ、1959年カリフォルニア国際博覧会ではゴールドデザイン賞、1960年朝日現代日本陶磁展で首席・日本陶芸協会賞、1962年日展では特別賞、1965年西ドイツ国際民藝展でゴールドメダルを獲得。後に日展の審査員を務め、日本を代表する全国美術展の審査場としても名を馳せた。石の器を斬新に崇拝し磁器の天才と評されることが多く、1986年67歳で逝去。川本の作は現在生産されておらず、本件は限定的な作品群に属する。
