Complete Japanese Samurai Armor – Showa Period – Red Lacquered Yoroi with “Maru ni Sumitate Yotsume” Family Crest

A complete set of Japanese samurai armor (Yoroi / Gusoku) dating from the Showa period (1926–1989), featuring an impressive traditional red-and-black color scheme and elaborate decorative details.

One of the most distinctive features of this armor is the traditional Japanese family crest “Maru ni Sumitate Yotsume” (丸に隅立て四つ目). This geometric mon is prominently displayed on the front of the cuirass and is also incorporated into the frontal decoration of the kabuto, creating a strong visual unity throughout the armor.

The set consists of the all components of a traditional Japanese suit of armor, including a kabuto (helmet), menpo (facial armor), do (cuirass), shoulder and arm protection, kusazuri, thigh protection, shin guards, and related armor components.

The kabuto is particularly imposing, with tall kuwagata-style frontal ornaments and the “Maru ni Sumitate Yotsume” crest prominently positioned at the front.

The red lacquered menpo has a highly expressive appearance, with a prominent nose, visible teeth and a light-colored moustache. Together with the large kabuto, it creates the powerful and dignified appearance associated with traditional samurai armor.

The red lacquered cuirass is decorated with a large black Maru ni Sumitate Yotsume family crest, accompanied by traditional tassels and decorative metal fittings. The same visual language continues throughout the armor, with lacquered plates, intricate lacing, textile elements and ornamental metalwork.

The armor displays natural signs of age and use consistent with a Showa-period piece, including scratches, lacquer wear, discoloration, patina and oxidation to some metal fittings, as well as wear to textile and lacing elements.

A traditional-style black armor storage box (gusoku-bitsu) is also included and shows age-related wear.

This complete armor set combines the imposing visual presence of traditional Japanese samurai armor with the distinctive Maru ni Sumitate Yotsume mon, making it an impressive display piece and an attractive addition to a collection of Japanese art, samurai culture or traditional arms and armor.
