Original Chamba wooden sculpture from Taraba State, Nigeria, carved in wood, 77 cm high, 1.3 kg, in fair condition and sold with stand.
Description from the seller
Chamba Sculpture - Taraba State, Nigeria, incl stand.
The towering wooden figure is characterized by radical verticality and a compelling interplay of mass and void. The slender body rises from two powerful, undulating legs. Long arms follow the torso, their openings creating open interior spaces. Above the slender neck sits a globular head with a protruding mouth, small eyes, and prominent ears; a tall, comb-like crown enhances the monumental effect. Notches, signs of wear, and an earthy, irregular patina lend the wood an archaic presence. Despite its extreme elongation, the figure maintains a remarkable physical tension.
The Chamba people live on both sides of the present-day border between Nigeria and Cameroon, particularly in the central Benue region and present-day Taraba State. Their sculpture encompasses both compact and distinctly columnar figures. Similar works were erected individually or as male-female pairs in sacred groves and could be associated with cults intended to provide protection from misfortune; offerings activated their spiritual efficacy.
This high degree of abstraction is also characteristic of the culturally diverse Benue Corridor, where Chamba, Mumuye, Jukun, and neighboring communities were in close contact for a long time. Attributions without a confirmed field provenance should therefore be treated with appropriate caution.
Selected Literature:
Richard Fardon: Column to Volume: Formal Innovation in Chamba Statuary. 2005.
Richard Fardon: Between God, the Dead and the Wild. Edinburgh 1990.
Marla C. Berns, Richard Fardon, Sidney L. Kasfir (eds.): Central Nigeria Unmasked: Arts of the Benue River Valley. Los Angeles 2011.
Some of the information is generated by artificial intelligence and is based on published sources from the fields of ethnography, archaeology, and art history.
