Charles and Ray Eames were a design couple whose personal and professional collaboration lead to the creation of some of the 20th century’s most recognised furniture and accessories.
They designed this shell chair in 1948.
In 1953, the founders of the Swiss company VITRA, the couple Erika and Willi Fehlbaum, saw the Eames chair in a shop window, on a trip to United Stated in 1953. They were so enthusiastic about it so they contacted Herman Miller. And in 1957, VITRA signed an official agreement with Herman Miller.
This granted Vitra the exclusive rights to manufacture and sell Eames designs in Europe and the Middle East
In the late 1980s, Ray Eames and Herman Miller, had some concerns about the long term effects of fiberglass in the environment. They decided to stop production of this chair.
