‘Espalier’ takes its title from the horticultural practice of training a plant to grow along a predetermined structure.
The flower appears contained within a rigid grid. The continuous alternation of colours reinforces a sense of order and control, as if something that would normally grow freely had been shaped according to an external structure.
The work explores the tension between natural growth and imposed order.
The lateral view reveals the adjacent faces of the cubes, extending the chromatic structure beyond the frontal image and emphasizing the sculptural depth of the work.
Giovanni Contardi is an Italian artist internationally recognised for his mosaics created entirely from original Rubik’s Cubes. His installations are permanently exhibited at the Rossini National Museum in Italy and at Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel at Disneyland Paris.
His work was mentioned by Ernő Rubik, inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, in his autobiographical book Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All (2020).
Selected works, installations and process documentation are shared on Instagram under the name JVENB.
