Description
This remarkable Viking Age cross, fashioned from a metal alloy, probably bronze, displays four strongly flared terminals characteristic of the developing Scandinavian Christian metalwork tradition of the later Viking Age.

Of particular interest is the small cross-shaped mark at the centre, creating a distinctive cross-within-a-cross composition. In the Christianizing Scandinavian world, such imagery expressed faith, salvation and divine protection during a period when Christianity and older Norse traditions existed alongside one another.

The upper suspension perforation may represent a later modification, suggesting adaptation during the object's long history of use.

With its bold form, central Christian symbol, naturally aged dark patina and surviving mineral deposits, this is a distinctive and highly collectible example of Scandinavian Christian metalwork stylistically attributable to the Viking Age.

Information
Acquired in 2026 through an auction connected with A.N. Auction House in Germany and subsequently transferred by its Netherlands-based former owner, N.A., the object has been recorded with high-resolution photographic equipment without alteration to its form or structure apart from minor color-balance correction, while additional museum-standard technical images may be requested during the auction and, when arranged before dispatch, an expert assessment together with a signed ownership document bearing the buyer’s name can be supplied digitally within 3–5 business days; all proposed identifications concerning chronology, material, function and symbolism should be understood as carefully considered academic attributions derived from typological study, museum parallels and specialist opinion rather than laboratory-confirmed conclusions, and buyers are therefore encouraged to consider the photographs together with the stated dimensions, particularly as close high-resolution imaging can affect the impression of scale, with the entire documentation and sales presentation prepared in accordance with principles of scholarly consistency, transparency and good faith, without knowingly offering reproductions or imitations, and with warm, museum-inspired photographic illumination used solely to reveal the historical surface and details more clearly.
