ツゲの根付：束の中に河童を捕らえた農民
ツゲ材の根付で、カラメル色の豊かな錆色を帯び、腰を下ろした田舎の男を描く。頭は帽子か頭巾で覆われ、陽気で愉しげな表情を浮かべ、胸の前で結んだ大きく結ばれた袋を抱え込んでいる。
袋の前面には、放射状に刻まれた円形のモチーフがあり、他の布地とははっきりと区別される。非常に plausible な解釈としては、このモチーフが袋の中からのぞく河童の小さな顔を表しており、農民に捕らえられた河童であることを示している。河童は日本民俗で最も愛される生き物の一つで、水辺の川や池に棲むいたずら好きな水の精で、頭頂部の浅いくぼみ（サラ）に水を入れてその力を保たねばならず、村人が河童をだまして頭の水をこぼさせたり、好物のきゅうりを差し出したりして善行の約束や治癒の知恵と引き換えに放免するという多くの説話がある。農民が捕らえられた河童を連れ去る姿は、江戸時代の庶民の想像力に基づくこの愛される物語の循環を直に drawn している。
