Description from the seller
プレ・コロンブス期モチェ文化/初期ランバイェケ文化 - ペルー
北海岸ペルー originating from the North Coast of Peru.
A finely modelled anthropomorphic ceramic vessel from the Late Moche to Early Lambayeque transition period originating from the North Coast of Peru.
The vessel depicts a seated human figure with a tall cylindrical headdress, expressive facial features, and a rounded body decorated with geometric painted motifs typical of North Coast iconography.
The head is sculpted with strong Moche‑derived traits—prominent nose, almond‑shaped eyes, and defined ears—while the tall headdress and painted body patterns show early Lambayeque influence, making this a transitional piece between the two cultures.
Condition: Age‑consistent surface wear and mineralisation, faded pigments in some areas.
Time period: ca. 600 - 900 AD
Dimensions: 20 cm high
Provenance: purchased at a Dutch auctionhouse.
