The Sarajevo Haggadah is one of the most celebrated surviving Hebrew illuminated manuscripts. Created in medieval Spain, probably in Barcelona around the middle of the 14th century, it contains a remarkable cycle of biblical miniatures, the traditional Passover Haggadah text with colourful illuminations, and liturgical poems.

Following the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, the manuscript travelled through Europe and was recorded in Italy in 1609. It later entered the collection of the National Museum in Sarajevo. During both the Second World War and the siege of Sarajevo, it was concealed and preserved from destruction, making its history a powerful symbol of cooperation between Jews, Muslims and Christians.

This attractive scholarly edition reproduces numerous pages from the manuscript and includes Cecil Roth’s important art-historical commentary, notes and bibliography.

Condition: The book itself is in good condition, with a sound binding and expected light age-related toning and occasional spotting. The original dust jacket is damaged, with tears, creasing, edge wear and a substantial loss at the upper-left corner, as clearly shown in the photographs.
