A lovely and highly collectible first illustrated edition of Handasyde’s nostalgic garden classic. This edition is celebrated for its exquisite Art Nouveau book design and illustrations by Charles Robinson, one of the premier artists of the Golden Age of Illustration. The book comprises four charming sections: The Old-Fashioned Garden, The Poor Man’s Garden, The Rich Man’s Garden, and The Haunted Garden. It features 8 full-page color plates protected by descriptive tissue guards, alongside numerous delicate black-and-white line drawings, headpieces, and beautifully decorated illustrated endpapers.

Condition Report:

Overall Condition: Fair plus. (Complete internal contents on a stable text block).

Binding & Spine: Bound in the original greyish-brown cloth with gilt Art Nouveau cover decoration.
**Please note: The original cloth spine is missing and has been overlaid/repaired with a plain brown tape binding. The corners and boards show typical shelf wear, rubbing, and minor bumping. The text block remains intact and holds together well, though it is no longer tight.

Interior: The internal contents are generally clean with clear, bold text. There is prominent, widespread foxing on the illustrated endpapers and flyleaves (including an early ink inscription dated New Year 1912 and a small personal library stamp). The inner text pages and color plates remain in much cleaner condition, showing only light, occasional foxing.

Plates: All 8 color plates are present, complete with their original printed tissue guards.
