水沼（茶道の水指）を鉄釉で描いた藤本義道作。後に iro-e jiki（色絵磁器）の重要無形文化財保持者に認定。暖かいクリーム色の地に、鉄絵の大胆な横方向の筆致が sweeping（波打つ）ように流れ、リズムと自信は、藤本が後に世界的に名を馳せる陶磁器の鳥の絵画を築くことになる、釉薬と筆の卓越した腕前を示唆している。蓋には銅の取手が付けられ、静かながらも疑いようのない存在感を完成させている。木製の保管箱には署名と核となる所見があり、藤本の直系弟子で東京藝術大学大学院の卒業生であり、師の作品の権威として認められている広瀬良之（Yoshiyuki Hirose）によって検印されている。藤本自身の元箱ではなく、弟子による認証箱である。

藤本義道（1919-1992）は、20世紀日本陶磁の巨頭の一人である。東京生まれ、東京美術学校（現・東京芸術大学）美術部を卒業後、富本憲吉と加藤肇の双方に師事し、九谷の系譜を受け継ぐ色絵磁器の伝統を吸収した。長く革新的な経歴の中で、藤本は自身の卓越した技法「ゆびょうかさい（yubyo-kasai）」を確立し、緩やかに階調をつけた自家調合の顔料を用いて鳥などのモチーフを、画家のような奥行と量感を持って描くようになった。これは従来の色絵の平坦で原色を強調する様式からの急進的な転換であった。1970年に東京藝術大学の教授となり、1985年には同大学の学長を務めた初の工芸家出身の学長である。1986年には iro-e jiki の重要無形文化財保持者に認定された。藤本は1992年、73歳で逝去。藤本の作品は現在生産されていない。これらは有限の作業群である。
