— 歴史的にはAzandeおよびNzakaraの高度な軍によって武器として使用されてきましたが、このタイプのナイフは「kpinga」と呼ばれ、20世紀には時代遅れとなり、実用的な道具というより象徴的な品となりました。彼らはとくに祖先を敬う儀式で用いられ、力ある男性の葬儀で取り扱われ、遺骸に投げ込まれたり墓に埋葬されたりもしました。権力の強力な象徴として、貴族の独占とみなされ、倉庫に保管・保護されることが多く、わずかな男性だけが自宅に「kpinga」を所有する特権を持っていました（Westerdijk著『The African Throwing Knife』1988年）。
