— この特徴的な斧は、広がる刃と厚い柄を特徴とし、ミフヌとラアリの首長によって用いられた社会的地位の象徴でした。他にも多くの文化で見られ、特にテケ族、ツァイ、ククヤ、ムボシ、クユ族にもみられます。斧は首長の儀礼衣装の一部であり、その地位の指標となっていました（Elsen, De fer et de fierté , 2003）（別の写真を参照）。
— ミフヌは人口は1万人から1万5千人の間で、川岸の森、湿地帯、サバンナに住んでいます。彼らには最高指導者はおらず、独立した部族長が複数います。指導者を mbe といい、村長によって選ばれ、村長は部族長によって選ばれる（Felix, 100 Peoples of Zaire and Their Sculpture , 1987）。
