【Product details】

A distinctive contemporary ceramic kogo incense container by Kazuo Takiguchi (滝口和男), created in 2003 as part of his “Illustrated Japanese Dictionary” (図解こくごじてん) series. The hand-modelled work depicts a humorous rabbit-like figure titled “Nushi”, meaning a “guardian spirit” or “master of a place”.

In the accompanying catalogue, Takiguchi explains that nushi can also refer to an animal believed to have lived in a mountain, river or other place for a very long time and to possess spiritual powers. He adds humorously that such a creature seems to have taken up residence in his ceramics, wondering whether it might really possess such powers.

The piece is finished with a mottled green glaze over a warm off-white clay body, with finely painted red decorative lines around the clothing. It is accompanied by the original signed wooden tomobako and related catalogue material.

Kazuo Takiguchi was born in Kyoto in 1953 and studied at Kyoto City University of Arts before completing his studies at the Royal College of Art in London in 1982. His major awards include the Foreign Minister’s Award at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition in 1985, the Prince Chichibu Cup Grand Prix in 1989, an Excellence Award at the MOA Museum of Art Okada Mokichi Award Exhibition in 1990, the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1991, and the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Award Encouragement Prize in 1996.
