— 19世紀は混乱、長距離移動、部族間戦争が続き、かつては一体だったバンダが地理的に広範囲に分散し、独立した小さな集団に分かれ、約50の異なる方言を話すようになった。同様に、バンダの武器は多様なスタイルを呈し、しばしば伝統的美学から大きく逸脱することがある。
— 歴史的にバンダのナイフは軍事的用途に限られてきた（例：敵軍の進撃を止めるためなど）が、1920年代以降は和平・精神的な目的、儀礼的なダンス道具としての役割も含むように変化した。この変容は、20世紀の紛争の衰退と、バンダがナイフに対して持つ情感的結びつきの両方の結果である（Westerdijk, The African Throwing Knife, 1988）。
— 一部の研究者は、耳（翼とクラウンの間にある小さな尖った突起）の有無を用いて、東部のバンダのナイフと西部のそれを区別する。一方、中心南部地域のグループ、すなわちムブグブ（Felix, Kipinga, 1991）由来の耳を持つナイフが記録されている。
