This work is a fine example of Hagiwara's
experimental Sōsaku Hanga (creative woodblock printing), combining
expressive line work, vivid colour fields and an abstract, surrealistic
composition.
The work is limited to an edition of 50
and is hand-signed by the artist in pencil in the lower margin. The
edition number is also handwritten in the margin.

The work is listed in the collection dataof the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art as Circus No. 6, dated 1968,woodblock print, measuring 41 × 68 cm.
Hagiwara's Circus series of 1968 ischaracterised by expressive scratched-line figures and experimental colour andprinting techniques. The series included seven works.

Condition:
The print shows signs of age and handling, including some toning/discolouration
and minor surface imperfections. The frame has minor scratches and signs of
wear. The original presentation box has damage, including tears and wear.

Artist Biography – Hideo Hagiwara (1913–2007)
Hideo Hagiwara (1913–2007) was one of Japan’s leading modern woodblock print artists. Born in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, he studied Western-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts).

Hagiwara later devoted himself to woodblock printmaking, combining traditional Japanese woodblock techniques with a distinctly modern and abstract visual language. He became particularly known for his rich use of colour, layered textures, expressive lines and abstract compositions.

His works were exhibited internationally and received recognition in Europe and the United States. Hagiwara played an important role in the development of modern Japanese printmaking, demonstrating how the traditional woodblock medium could be transformed into a sophisticated form of contemporary art.

In 1977, he was awarded the Order of the Purple Ribbon (Shiju Hōshō) by the Japanese government for his contribution to the arts.

Hagiwara’s prints are held in numerous museums and collections internationally and continue to attract collectors of Japanese modern and contemporary prints.

This work, Circus No. 6, was created in 1968 and is a limited-edition woodblock print of 50. The present example is inscribed in pencil “3/50”.
