Description:
An elegant Japanese lacquer tea caddy (natsume) made for use in the traditional tea ceremony (chanoyu), decorated with a colorful noshi-style ribbon motif.
The natsume has a softly rounded cylindrical form with a gently domed lid, finished in a deep glossy black lacquer. Across the lid and upper body is a striking arrangement of long decorative ribbons tied together in a bow, rendered in gold, red, green and orange tones. Several of the ribbons contain fine geometric and scrolling patterns, creating a lively contrast against the restrained black ground.
The motif recalls noshi (熨斗), ceremonial decorative strips traditionally associated in Japan with good fortune, celebration and auspicious occasions. Such motifs are particularly appropriate for tea utensils used during festive gatherings, New Year tea ceremonies, or other celebratory settings.
The decoration appears to combine gold-toned lacquer work with colored lacquer details, giving the ribbons a layered and textile-like quality. The design continues naturally from the lid onto the body, making the entire vessel visually cohesive while preserving the simple proportions characteristic of traditional natsume.
Natsume are traditionally used to hold powdered matcha for usucha, or thin tea, and are among the essential utensils of the Japanese tea ceremony.
