Description from the seller

[Overview]
Outstanding, collector-grade Japanese lacquerware document box (Bunko / 文庫) representing the historic and world-renowned tradition of Aizu Lacquerware (Aizu-shikki / 会津塗), boasting over 500 years of history.
This box features an elegant "Mentori" (bevelled edges) design and a deep, lustrous black finish that creates a pristine reflective surface.

[Design & Artistry (Taka Maki-e)]
The lid is masterfully decorated with two folding fans (Senmen / 扇面), a traditional Japanese symbol of expanding prosperity and good fortune.
The inner details of the fans—featuring auspicious pine trees, plum blossoms, and floral patterns—are rendered in exquisite "Taka Maki-e" (高蒔絵 - High-Relief Lacquer Painting).
The artwork is physically raised from the surface, creating a stunning three-dimensional texture. The intricate geometric lattice lines engraved beneath the gold dust showcase the breathtaking precision of a master artisan. The artist's golden seal (Hanko) is elegantly stamped on the bottom right.

[Provenance & Historical Context]
The inner lid features an elegant gold-lacquered inscription reading: "In Celebration of the 77th Birthday (Kiju / 喜寿) - President of the Chiba Prefecture Police Alumni Association".
This confirms the box was custom-ordered as a prestigious, high-status commemorative gift for the head of a prominent police organization to celebrate a milestone 77th birthday.
It adds remarkable historical value and guarantees its absolute authenticity as a non-mass-produced, premium presentation item.
