Meissen – Large “Weinernte” Grape Harvest Figural Group – Model I2 – Original Model by Johann Carl Schönheit, 1785

Description

A magnificent large Meissen porcelain figural group, depicting the grape harvest and wine-making scene known as “Weinernte.”

This highly detailed composition features several figures gathered around a large wine barrel, including musicians, grape harvesters and figures enjoying wine. The group is richly modelled with numerous delicate details, including a ladder, baskets of grapes, barrels, musical instruments and finely painted costumes.

The original model was designed in 1785 by Johann Carl Schönheit for the Meissen manufactory.

The present example is a modern Meissen production, faithfully reproducing this historic 18th-century model. This distinction is important: the piece itself is modern, while the original design dates to 1785.

The underside bears the famous Meissen crossed swords mark in underglaze blue.

This model is also documented in a Meissen reference publication under the title “Weinernte”, with the original model attributed to Johann Carl Schönheit, 1785. A photograph of the published reference is included.

Its large scale, complex multi-figure composition and extensive hand-painted decoration give the piece a particularly impressive presence.

Condition

The piece is in very good overall condition.

There is one small chip to the tip of a thin projecting rod/stick element, clearly shown in the photographs.

Apart from this single minor loss, no other damage or notable defects were observed.

Considering the large size and the many delicate projecting elements of this complex figural group, the overall condition is very good.
