Description from the seller
Auction Catalogue Description
A Rare and Important Mid-Century Modern Honey Walnut Sideboard (Model 'Pranzo 602 / Fiammato')
Designed by Silvio Coppola (Italian, 1920–1985)
Manufactured by Bernini, Italy, circa 1968
Lot Description
An exceptional example of post-war Italian high-design, this monumental 'Pranzo 602' sideboard showcases Silvio Coppola’s signature mastery of geometric rigor, architectural scale, and rich materiality. Expertly crafted from finely figured Italian walnut veneer in a warm honey finish, chosen for its dramatic, undulating grain patterns.
The structural upper tier features a stepped silhouette divided into eight open cubicle compartments. Crucially, this lot retains its complete set of four original white-glazed ceramic spice containers, each bearing the authentic signature/factory mark—a highly coveted detail rarely found intact. The lower section is anchored by four substantial panelled doors (comprising two central doors and two innovative 180-degree opening corner doors) punctuated by robust turned-wood spherical knobs, opening to reveal adjustable interior shelving. The top surface is flanked by dual drop-front compartments housing ingenious, integrated pull-out serving trays.
Presented in excellent vintage condition, exhibiting a beautifully preserved warm honey patina, exceptional joinery, and only minimal, superficial wear consistent with age and careful residential use.
Dimensions:
Width: 244 cm
Depth: 53 cm
Height: 123 cm
Literature:
Giuliana Gramigna, Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950-2000, Allemandi, Torino, 2011, p. 112.
