オパールは水和した二酸化ケイ素の形態で、水分含有量は3%から21%の範囲です。実際、この水分の浸透性こそがオパールを親水性にしている理由です。
オパールは比較的低温で沈殿し、岩石の裂缝のほぼあらゆる種類に生じ得ますが、最も一般的にはリモナイト、砂岩、流紗岩、泥灰岩、玄武岩などとともに見つかります。貴オパールだけが内部色の変動した遊色を見せます。
顕微鏡スケールでは、貴オパールは直径約150〜300 nmのシリカ球が六方最密充填（六方晶または立方最密）格子を形成して構成されています。これらの秩序だったシリカ球が、オパールの微細構造を通過する光の干渉・回折を引き起こすことで内部色を生み出します。
